Road to Mustang Motorcycle Tour

Himalayan Eight-Thousander Panorama | Lo Manthang – Royal City of Upper Mustang | 14 Days Motorcycle Adventure | ~1,400 km Himalayan Ride

The remote Mustang Valley lies north of the Annapurna massif, stretching toward the Tibetan Plateau. Once an isolated Himalayan kingdom, Upper Mustang remained closed to travelers until 1992. Today it offers one of the most exclusive and spectacular Nepal motorcycle tours available — a true Himalayan adventure ride for experienced riders. This 14-day Upper Mustang motorcycle tour in Nepal takes you from the cultural heart of Kathmandu to the ancient royal city of Lo Manthang near the Tibetan border. The route combines high-altitude mountain passes, dramatic canyon roads, remote desert landscapes and authentic Tibetan culture — making it one of the most diverse Himalayan motorcycle expeditions in South Asia.

Our journey begins in Kathmandu, the gateway to Nepal motorcycle travel. From there we ride west through hill country and traditional villages toward Pokhara — the starting point of many Annapurna expeditions and one of the most scenic cities in Nepal.

Leaving Pokhara, the route follows the legendary Kali Gandaki Valley, widely regarded as one of the world’s most spectacular high-mountain corridors. Riding between the eight-thousanders Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and Annapurna I (8,091 m), we gradually ascend toward the high-altitude desert of Mustang. We pass through Jomsom and continue to Muktinath (3,800 m), one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas. From here the road leads beyond Kagbeni into the restricted region of Upper Mustang — a destination often described as Nepal’s “forbidden kingdom.”

The ride to Lo Manthang, the former royal capital of Mustang, is the highlight of this Nepal adventure motorcycle trip. Ancient monasteries, Tibetan Buddhist culture, wind-eroded cliffs and remote gravel roads define this unforgettable landscape. Along the way, sections of remote dirt tracks and rugged mountain roads add an extra layer of excitement, making this journey a true adventure motorcycle tour in the Himalayas.

On the return journey, we traverse the Kali Gandaki Gorge — considered the deepest gorge in the world — and cross one of Nepal’s longest suspension bridges high above the river valley. To complete this unique Nepal motorcycle experience, the tour continues south into Chitwan National Park for a wildlife safari. From 4,000-meter mountain passes to subtropical jungle, few motorcycle journeys offer such dramatic contrasts.

This Road to Mustang expedition is designed for riders seeking:

Tibetmoto Tours …

… has put together a very nice tour with a lot of variety, huge gorges and wide mountain views. The tour was a lot of fun in the group and I’m already looking forward to the next tour with Tibetmoto!

Mark B.

The bikes …

… were very easy to ride on the tour. The winding roads in the gorge and on the mountains were easy for an experienced driver like me and were a lot of fun. For that alone I would book the tour again.

Winfired W.

It’s been …

… a long time since I found such a well-organized tour as this one. The many highlights, such as the city of Lijiang or the deep Tiger Leaping Gorge, were just as worth seeing as the biggest prayer wheel in the world in Shangri-La. But my personal highlight was spending the night with a Tibetan family. Excellent!

Later, there is time to explore Thamel, Kathmandu’s vibrant traveler district. For decades, this lively neighborhood has been the hub for trekkers, mountaineers and motorcycle travelers heading into the Himalayas. Narrow streets are lined with cafés, restaurants, outdoor shops and small boutiques selling prayer flags, handicrafts and traditional Nepalese art. Those who wish can also visit the nearby Garden of Dreams, a peaceful historic garden dating back to the 1920s. With its pavilions, fountains and quiet courtyards, it provides a calm retreat from the bustling streets of the city.

The first day of the journey is intentionally relaxed — allowing time to arrive, recover from the flight and immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Kathmandu before our Nepal Himalayan motorcycle expedition begins.

Day 2: Kathmandu to Gorkha: First Ride into the Himalayan Foothills

Today our Nepal motorcycle adventure truly begins. We leave Kathmandu early in the morning to avoid the city traffic and soon reach quieter mountain roads leading west toward the Himalayan foothills. After the first kilometers outside the Kathmandu Valley, the route becomes increasingly scenic. Narrow winding roads lead through terraced hillsides, small villages and fertile river valleys. This first riding day is intentionally designed to help riders gradually adapt to local traffic conditions, road surfaces and the rhythm of riding in Nepal.

As we continue along these peaceful countryside roads, wide views open across the rolling landscapes of central Nepal. On clear days, the distant snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas appear on the horizon — offering the first glimpse of the dramatic mountain scenery that awaits later on this Upper Mustang motorcycle tour. Our destination for the day is Gorkha, a historic hill town located on a ridge overlooking deep valleys and forested hills. Gorkha holds an important place in Nepalese history as the birthplace of modern Nepal and the original homeland of the famous Gurkha soldiers, who later became renowned worldwide for their courage and military tradition.

High above the town stands the Gorkha Durbar, a former royal palace and temple complex offering sweeping views across the surrounding mountains and valleys. The peaceful setting and historic atmosphere make Gorkha an ideal first overnight stop on our Himalayan motorcycle journey. In the evening we enjoy dinner together at the hotel while taking in the tranquil mountain surroundings. With a bit of luck, the distant Himalayan peaks may already be visible in the fading evening light — a reminder that the high mountains are slowly drawing closer.

Distance covered: approx. 160 km

Day 3: Scenic Mountains Roads to Begnas Lake & Pokhara

Today’s stage takes us along some of the most scenic secondary roads in central Nepal as we ride toward the Annapurna region. Leaving Gorkha behind, we follow quiet mountain routes that wind through terraced farmland, forested hills and traditional villages. Our first highlight of the day is Bandipur, a beautifully preserved hilltop town that once flourished along the historic trade route between India and Tibet. With its elegant Newari architecture, traditional houses and cobbled streets, Bandipur feels like a step back in time. From the village ridge, wide panoramic views stretch across the Himalayan foothills and distant mountain ranges.

After a short break we continue along smaller mountain roads descending toward the Pokhara Valley. Along the way we reach the peaceful Begnas Lake, located southeast of Pokhara. This quiet lakeside setting offers a perfect place to relax, enjoy lunch and take in the tranquil surroundings. Parts of today’s route include small gravel sections and narrow hillside roads, offering riders an early taste of the diverse terrain that defines this Nepal adventure motorcycle tour.

In the afternoon we arrive in Pokhara, widely considered the most beautiful city in Nepal and the gateway to the Annapurna mountain range. Situated directly on the shores of Phewa Lake, the city offers spectacular views of snow-covered Himalayan peaks rising dramatically above the valley. Our hotel is located near the lakeside area, just a short walk from the waterfront. In the evening you may choose to relax in one of the many cafés and restaurants along Lake Road, enjoy live music, or take a peaceful boat ride across the lake while the Annapurna peaks glow in the evening light.

Pokhara’s relaxed atmosphere makes it one of the most pleasant stops of the entire Himalayan motorcycle expedition.

Day 4: The Himalayas Await! Riding into the Kali Gandaki Gorge

Today the landscape begins to change dramatically as we ride deeper into the Himalayas. Leaving Pokhara in the morning, we initially follow a well-developed road before gradually turning north toward the legendary Kali Gandaki Valley — one of the most spectacular riding routes in Nepal. As the road climbs higher, the valleys narrow and the terrain becomes increasingly rugged. Tight bends, narrow mountain sections and occasional rough patches require attentive riding, but the reward is an ever-changing panorama of waterfalls, steep rock walls and wild Himalayan scenery.

By the afternoon we enter the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge, widely considered the deepest gorge in the world. The powerful Kali Gandaki River cuts through this immense canyon between two of the highest mountains on Earth: Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and Annapurna I (8,091 m). Measured from the summit of Dhaulagiri down to the riverbed below, the vertical difference reaches more than five kilometres — creating one of the most impressive landscapes of the entire Himalayan motorcycle adventure.

Riding through this immense corridor between two Himalayan giants is an unforgettable experience. With every kilometer the scenery becomes more dramatic as the road winds north toward the high mountain regions of Mustang. Beyond the village of Kobang, the first close views of the Annapurna range appear when the weather is clear. Soon afterwards we reach Kalopani, located at around 2,500 meters above sea level.

Kalopani lies peacefully between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs and marks the transition toward the high alpine environment of Lower Mustang. Surrounded by towering peaks and wide valley views, it is one of the most scenic overnight stops of the entire Nepal motorcycle tour. In the evening we relax on the terrace of our guesthouse and enjoy the spectacular Himalayan panorama — with the ice-covered giants of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges rising high above the valley.

Distance covered: approx. 130 km

Day 5: Jomsom, Kagbeni and the Sacred Temple of Muktinath

Today we continue north through the dramatic landscapes of the Kali Gandaki Valley, riding deeper into the Mustang region. The mountains rise higher, vegetation becomes sparse and the scenery gradually transforms into the striking high-altitude terrain that characterizes this Himalayan motorcycle adventure. Our first stop is Jomsom, the largest town in the Mustang district and an important hub along the famous Annapurna Circuit trekking route. The small airport here is known for its spectacular mountain approaches, where aircraft fly through the narrow valley between steep cliffs and powerful Himalayan winds.

From Jomsom we continue along the valley floor toward Kagbeni, a fascinating medieval village located at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong rivers. With its narrow alleys, mud-brick houses and ancient monasteries, Kagbeni marks the historic gateway to Upper Mustang. The strong Tibetan cultural influence is already clearly visible here. After a short break we leave the valley floor and begin the climb toward Muktinath, one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the Himalayas. Situated at approximately 3,700 meters above sea level, Muktinath Temple is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, attracting pilgrims from Nepal and India throughout the year.
The temple complex is famous for its 108 sacred water spouts, where pilgrims perform ritual purification ceremonies. Nearby sacred ponds and the dramatic mountain surroundings give the site a powerful spiritual atmosphere. We visit the temple in the afternoon and observe pilgrims performing their rituals, while colorful prayer flags flutter in the mountain wind. Around the temple complex, holy men known as Babas sit in bright robes offering blessings to travelers and pilgrims alike.

Tonight we stay in the village of Muktinath, surrounded by the vast landscapes of the Mustang region at an altitude of about 3,710 meters. From here, the route will soon lead us into the remote highlands of Upper Mustang, one of the most fascinating regions of the entire Nepal motorcycle expedition.

Distance covered: approx. 100 km

Day 6: Into Upper Mustang and the Royal City of Lo Manthang

Today marks one of the most exciting stages of our Upper Mustang motorcycle tour as we enter the remote and culturally unique region of Upper Mustang, once a restricted kingdom along the historic trade routes between Nepal and Tibet. Leaving Muktinath in the morning, we first follow a scenic high-altitude road with sweeping views back toward the vast Kali Gandaki Valley and the snow-covered peaks of the Dhaulagiri range. After several viewpoints, the route gradually descends again toward the valley floor before continuing upstream along the Kali Gandaki River.

Near the village of Chhusang, we cross the river and officially enter the restricted area of Upper Mustang. From here the landscape begins to change dramatically. The green valleys of Lower Mustang give way to a dry, wind-sculpted high-altitude desert with striking rock formations and wide open plateaus. Along the route we pass traditional villages such as Gami, known for one of the longest mani walls in the region — long rows of carved stone prayer tablets inscribed with Buddhist mantras. Small monasteries and chörtens appear frequently along the road, reflecting the deep influence of Tibetan Buddhist culture that defines Upper Mustang.

One of the most special stops today is Lho Gekar Gompa, believed to be one of the oldest monasteries in the Mustang region. According to tradition, this sacred monastery dates back to the 8th century and is closely linked to the legendary Buddhist master Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). The route then climbs steadily through dramatic sandstone landscapes carved by centuries of wind and erosion. After crossing a narrow mountain pass at around 3,950 meters, the scenery suddenly opens onto a vast plateau — and in the distance the walls of Lo Manthang appear.

Arriving in Lo Manthang, the historic capital of the former Kingdom of Mustang, feels like stepping into another world. The ancient walled city, with its clay houses, monasteries and former royal palace, is the cultural heart of Upper Mustang and one of the most remarkable destinations in the Himalayas. Tonight we stay inside or near this extraordinary royal city, surrounded by the timeless landscapes of the Tibetan-influenced Himalayas.

Distance covered: approx. 100 km

Day 7: Exploring Lo Manthang, the Chhoser Caves and the Tibetan Border

Today we explore the remote highlands surrounding Lo Manthang, the historic royal capital of Upper Mustang. This region offers some of the most fascinating cultural and historical sites of the entire Himalayan motorcycle expedition. In the morning we set out on a scenic ride across the vast plateau north of Lo Manthang. The route follows narrow mountain tracks through the barren high-altitude landscapes that define the Mustang region. Surrounded by wide horizons and wind-sculpted cliffs, the scenery here feels closer to the Tibetan Plateau than to the lush valleys of central Nepal.

One of today’s highlights is a visit to the famous Chhoser caves, also known as the Jhong cave complex. These ancient caves are carved high into the sandstone cliffs and are believed to be more than two thousand years old. Archaeologists suggest they were once used as dwellings, meditation retreats or burial chambers by early inhabitants of the Mustang region. Depending on local conditions and permits, we may also continue toward the Korala Pass, located at approximately 4,660 meters on the border between Nepal and Tibet. For centuries this high mountain pass served as an important trade route linking the Kingdom of Mustang with the Tibetan Plateau. Today it remains a remote and windswept frontier with dramatic views across the high Himalayan landscape.

On our return to Lo Manthang we occasionally encounter Tibetan nomad families living in traditional black yak-hair tents — a rare glimpse into a nomadic way of life that has changed little over generations. In the afternoon we explore the historic old town of Lo Manthang on foot. Behind the massive clay walls lie narrow streets, traditional houses and several important monasteries. Among the most notable are Jampa Lhakhang, often called the “House of Maitreya,” the impressive Thubchen Gompa with its ancient murals, and Chodey Gompa, which remains an active center of Buddhist practice.

The former Royal Palace of Mustang still dominates the skyline of the city, reminding visitors of the region’s long and fascinating history as an independent Himalayan kingdom. The evening is spent in the quiet atmosphere of Lo Manthang, sharing dinner and reflecting on a day spent exploring one of the most remote and culturally unique regions of the Himalayas.

Distance covered: approx. 80 km (roundtrip)

Old bridge alley in Lijiang

Day 8: From Lo Manthang to the Apple Village of Marpha

After breakfast we leave Lo Manthang, the historic royal city of Upper Mustang, and begin our journey south through the vast high-altitude landscapes of the Mustang region. Riding once again across the wide plateaus and desert valleys of Upper Mustang offers a final chance to experience this extraordinary Himalayan environment. Our first stop is the historic village of Tsarang (Charang), one of the most important cultural centers of Upper Mustang. Here we visit the impressive Tsarang Monastery and the nearby Old Royal Palace, a large multi-storey mud-brick structure dating back to the 14th century that once served as the residence of local rulers.

A walk through the village reveals narrow lanes, whitewashed houses and cultivated fields surrounded by the dramatic desert landscapes of Mustang. The strong influence of Tibetan Buddhist culture remains visible throughout the settlement. Continuing south, we gradually descend from the high plateau of Upper Mustang into the greener valleys of Lower Mustang. As the altitude decreases, the climate becomes noticeably milder and the first orchards begin to appear along the valley slopes.

By the afternoon we arrive in Marpha, one of the most picturesque villages in the Kali Gandaki Valley. Known as the famous apple village of Mustang, Marpha is renowned throughout Nepal for its apple orchards, traditional apple brandy and dried apple products. The village is characterized by its charming stone houses, flat roofs and narrow cobbled alleys that wind through the settlement. Above the village stands the small Marpha Monastery, while a large statue of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) watches over the valley from the hillside.
After the wide open landscapes of Upper Mustang, Marpha offers a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere — a perfect place to relax and reflect on the extraordinary journey through one of the most remote regions of the Himalayas.

Distance covered: approx. 90 km

Day 9: Nepal’s Longest Suspension Bridge

Today we continue our journey south along the dramatic landscapes of the Kali Gandaki Valley, leaving the high alpine environment of Mustang behind. As we descend gradually, the climate becomes warmer and the vegetation greener, offering a striking contrast to the high-altitude desert landscapes of the previous days. Along the way we visit a small settlement of Tibetan refugees, where several families have lived for generations after leaving Tibet. Many of the residents maintain traditional ways of life, relying on agriculture, fruit cultivation and handicrafts. A short walk through the village provides an interesting insight into daily life shaped by Tibetan culture and Himalayan traditions.

By the afternoon we reach Tatopani, a riverside village well known for its natural hot springs. Depending on time and interest, riders can relax in the warm mineral pools — a welcome break after several days of riding through the mountains. The route then continues south toward the Baglung and Kushma region, where the Kali Gandaki Gorge becomes especially dramatic. Here we encounter one of the most impressive engineering structures in Nepal — a spectacular suspension bridge stretching high above the river valley.

This bridge is among the longest suspension bridges in Nepal, offering breathtaking views deep into the gorge below. Those who wish can cross the bridge on foot for unforgettable photos and a thrilling perspective over the valley. Finally, we cross a narrow suspension bridge leading to our hotel, located high above the river. From here we enjoy wide views across the rugged landscapes of the Kali Gandaki Gorge, bringing another

Day 10: Return to Pokhara: Lakeside Relaxation in the Annapurna Region

After the intense riding days in the high Himalayas, today’s stage brings us back to Pokhara, the beautiful lakeside city at the foot of the Annapurna mountain range. At around 70 kilometres, the ride is relatively short and mostly on well-paved roads — a relaxed stage designed to give riders time to unwind after the adventure in Upper Mustang. The road follows the scenic valleys of central Nepal before gradually opening toward the Pokhara Valley, surrounded by forested hills and distant Himalayan peaks.

Before reaching our hotel near Phewa Lake, we make a few interesting stops around Pokhara. One visit takes us to a Tibetan refugee settlement, where families have lived since fleeing Tibet after 1959. Here traditional Tibetan handicrafts and hand-woven carpets are still produced, offering insight into the culture and daily life of the Tibetan community in Nepal. We then ride up to the World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa), one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Pokhara region. From the hilltop terrace, panoramic views stretch across Phewa Lake, the city of Pokhara and — in clear weather — the snow-covered peaks of the Annapurna Himal, including the iconic Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain).

Nearby stands the impressive Pumdikot Shiva Statue, another panoramic viewpoint overlooking the valley and surrounding mountain landscapes. The remainder of the afternoon is free to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Pokhara’s Lakeside district. Cafés, restaurants and small shops line the streets near the waterfront. Those who wish can take a rowing boat onto Phewa Lake, stroll along the lakeshore or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of one of Nepal’s most beautiful cities.

Distance covered: approx. 70 km

Day 11: From the Himalayas to the Jungles of Chitwan

Today we leave the Himalayan foothills behind and ride south toward the subtropical plains of the Terai region. This stage offers one of the most remarkable landscape transitions of the entire Nepal motorcycle tour — descending from cool mountain valleys into the warm jungle lowlands of southern Nepal. The route first follows smaller mountain roads through forested hills and remote villages. Along the way we occasionally enjoy distant views back toward the Himalayan mountain range, which gradually disappears behind us as we continue south.

Today’s ride is one of the longer stages of the journey. The road alternates between winding hill routes and broader connecting roads, passing through river valleys, terraced farmland and rural settlements that offer a glimpse into everyday life in the Nepalese countryside. As we approach the lowlands, the landscape begins to change noticeably. The air becomes warmer and more humid, vegetation becomes dense and tropical, and wide river plains replace the steep mountain terrain.

By the afternoon we arrive in the region of Chitwan National Park, Nepal’s first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its extraordinary biodiversity. Our destination is Sauraha, a small town located at the edge of the national park and the main gateway for wildlife safaris. Here a completely new chapter of our Himalayan motorcycle adventure begins. After the high mountain deserts of Upper Mustang, the lush jungles and wildlife habitats of Chitwan feel like a different world — a remarkable contrast within the same journey.

Distance covered: approx. 180 km

Day 12: Jungle Safari in Chitwan National Park

Today we explore the remarkable wildlife habitats of Chitwan National Park, one of the most famous nature reserves in South Asia. Established in 1973 as Nepal’s first national park, Chitwan is now a UNESCO World Heritage Siterenowned for its exceptional biodiversity and protected jungle landscapes. The park is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including the endangered greater one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, sloth bears, leopards, wild elephants and numerous species of deer and birds.

In the morning we begin a guided jungle safari, exploring parts of the park either on foot or by vehicle depending on conditions. Walking through the dense sal forests and tall grasslands offers an exciting opportunity to discover the diverse ecosystems of the Terai lowlands. With a bit of luck we may encounter rhinos grazing in the grasslands or observe fresh tiger tracks along the forest paths. Another highlight is the visit to a local elephant breeding center, where conservation programs focus on protecting and caring for these remarkable animals.

Later we enjoy a peaceful canoe trip on the Rapti River, drifting silently past riverbanks where crocodiles bask in the sun and exotic bird species gather along the water’s edge. From the calm perspective of the river, the jungle reveals an entirely different side of its wildlife and landscapes. In the evening we return to our lodge in Sauraha, where there is time to relax in the garden or watch the sunset over the river. After days spent among the high Himalayan mountains, this experience in Nepal’s subtropical jungle provides a fascinating contrast and a memorable highlight of the journey.

Day 13: Return to Kathmandu

In the morning we leave Sauraha and begin our return journey from the subtropical lowlands of southern Nepal back toward the Kathmandu Valley. The route gradually climbs from the flat plains of the Terai region into forested hills and winding mountain roads. Along the way the scenery changes once again, passing river valleys, terraced farmland and rural villages that offer glimpses of everyday life in Nepal. As we approach Kathmandu, the road becomes more mountainous and the traffic gradually increases. Before reaching the city, there is the option to stop at the Dakshinkali Temple, an important Hindu shrine dedicated to the goddess Kali. The temple is located in a scenic forested gorge south of Kathmandu and is one of the region’s most significant religious sites.

By the afternoon we arrive back in Kathmandu, where the remainder of the day is free to explore the cultural highlights of the city. Those interested in sightseeing may visit some of the most famous landmarks of the Kathmandu Valley, many of which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most sacred Hindu temples on the banks of the Bagmati River; the monumental Boudhanath Stupa, an important center of Tibetan Buddhism; and the beautifully preserved historic city of Bhaktapur, known for its temples, pagodas and traditional Newari architecture.

In the evening we gather for a farewell dinner together in Kathmandu, celebrating the incredible journey from the high deserts of Upper Mustang to the jungles of Chitwan National Park. The evening offers a chance to share memories of the adventure before our Nepal motorcycle expedition comes to an end.
