Roads to Heaven Motorcycle Tour

Zanskar & Ladakh Expedition | Shingo La, Sisir La & Sengge La | 15 Days | Himalayan Motorcycle Adventure

Few motorcycle journeys capture the raw spirit of the Indian Himalayas as powerfully as this extraordinary ride from the Valley of the Gods in Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh and Dharamsala. Our Roads to Heaven motorcycle expeditionleads deep into the remote Zanskar Valley and across newly opened high mountain passes before continuing north into the dramatic landscapes of Ladakh. This route has only recently become accessible thanks to the construction of several spectacular new Himalayan roads. The passes of Shingo La (5,105 m), Sisir La (4,790 m) and Sengge La (5,060 m) now connect regions that were once extremely difficult to reach. For adventurous riders, this creates one of the most exciting and challenging motorcycle routes in the Himalayas.

The journey begins in the lush Kullu Valley, often referred to as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by forested slopes, traditional villages and ancient temples, this region forms the perfect gateway to the Himalayan mountains. From here we ride across the famous Rohtang Pass, leaving the green foothills behind as the landscape gradually transforms into the rugged high-altitude wilderness of Zanskar.

Zanskar remains one of the most isolated regions of the Indian Himalayas. Deep gorges, vast mountain plateaus and centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist monasteries shape the character of this remote valley. Riding through this landscape offers a rare sense of adventure and discovery. Highlights include visits to the important monasteries of Bardan and Karsha, as well as the mysterious ruins of Zangla Palace, perched high above the valley. Crossing the newly opened mountain passes between Zanskar and Ladakh is a thrilling experience. The dramatic cliffhanger roads and rugged off-road sections require concentration and riding skill, rewarding riders with some of the most spectacular scenery in the Himalayas.

Upon reaching Ladakh, the atmosphere changes again. We spend time in the peaceful village oasis of Tingmosgangbefore continuing through the western Indus Valley to the historic town of Leh, the cultural center of Ladakh. Surrounded by monasteries, ancient palaces and vibrant markets, Leh offers a welcome pause after the demanding stages through Zanskar. The final part of the journey follows the legendary Manali–Leh Highway, often called the “Highway to Heaven.” Here we cross several high Himalayan passes above 5,000 meters, including Tanglang La (5,390 m), one of the highest motorable passes in the world.

After days of riding across remote mountain landscapes, the road gradually descends back into the green foothills of Himachal Pradesh. The adventure concludes in Dharamsala, home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile. This spiritual mountain town provides a fitting finale to an unforgettable motorcycle expedition across the Himalayas. With 1,600 kilometers of riding over 15 days, this tour combines demanding mountain roads, remote off-road routes and deep cultural encounters. For experienced riders seeking a true Himalayan motorcycle adventure, the Roads to Heaven tour offers one of the most diverse and rewarding journeys in northern India.

I had …

… a lot of fun on the tour. We got along well within the group and the guides were also very nice. The tour was very well organized.

Tibetmoto Tours …

… has put together a very nice tour with a lot of variety, huge gorges and wide mountain views. The tour was a lot of fun in the group and I’m already looking forward to the next tour with Tibetmoto!

Mark B.

The bikes …

… were very easy to ride on the tour. The winding roads in the gorge and on the mountains were easy for an experienced driver like me and were a lot of fun. For that alone I would book the tour again.

Winfired W.

It’s been …

… a long time since I found such a well-organized tour as this one. The many highlights, such as the city of Lijiang or the deep Tiger Leaping Gorge, were just as worth seeing as the biggest prayer wheel in the world in Shangri-La. But my personal highlight was spending the night with a Tibetan family. Excellent!

Roads to Heaven Motorcycle Tour – Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Delhi, connecting flight to Kullu

Your Roads to Heaven motorcycle adventure begins with an early morning arrival in Delhi, the bustling capital of India. Shortly afterwards we board a connecting flight to Kullu, located in the beautiful Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh. Our destination for the day is the historic village of Naggar, situated in the heart of the Kullu Valley, approximately 1,760 meters above sea level. This region is often referred to as the “Valley of the Gods”, a name inspired by its stunning natural beauty and the many ancient Hindu temples scattered throughout the valley.

Naggar once served as the capital of the Kullu Kingdom, and the impressive Naggar Castle, perched high above the village, still reflects this historic past. From here we enjoy breathtaking views across a landscape of green fields, forests, traditional villages and the snow-covered peaks of the Western Himalayas. Our accommodation is a charming family-run hotel offering a peaceful atmosphere away from the noise of modern cities. From the rooftop restaurant we can admire panoramic views of the surrounding mountains while enjoying both local Himachali cuisine and western dishes. This tranquil setting in the Kullu Valley provides the perfect introduction to the Himalayan landscapes that will accompany us throughout the coming days of the tour.

Day 2: Briefing & Warm-up Ride in Kullu Valley

After breakfast we begin the day with a comprehensive tour briefing, where our guides introduce the route, explain the riding conditions in the Indian Himalayas, and familiarize everyone with the Royal Enfield motorcycles that will accompany us throughout the journey. This introduction also covers important aspects of riding in India, including road conditions, mountain riding techniques and safety considerations for the upcoming adventure through Zanskar and Ladakh.

Once the preparations are complete, we set out for a relaxed warm-up ride through the scenic mountain roads of the Kullu Valley. This short ride offers the perfect opportunity to get comfortable with the motorcycles while enjoying the surrounding Himalayan landscapes. Our route leads along quiet rural roads through traditional villages and forested hillsides. Along the way we stop at a beautiful mountain waterfall and several viewpoints overlooking the wide valley and the snow-covered peaks of the Western Himalayas.

The ride is intentionally relaxed, allowing riders to adjust to the motorcycles, the roads and the rhythm of travel in northern India. It is also a wonderful opportunity to experience the local culture and everyday life of the region before the real Himalayan adventure begins. In the afternoon we return to Naggar, where the rest of the day can be spent relaxing at the hotel or exploring the historic village.

Naggar – 1,760 m
Distance covered: approx. 60 km

Day 3: Crossing the Rohtang Pass into the High Himalayas

Today the real Himalayan motorcycle expedition begins. Leaving the peaceful Kullu Valley, we ride north toward the dramatic high mountain landscapes that mark the gateway to the greater Himalayas. Our route climbs steadily toward the famous Rohtang Pass (3,980 m), one of the most historic mountain crossings in northern India. For decades this pass was the main route connecting the lush valleys of Himachal Pradesh with the remote high-altitude regions of Lahaul and Ladakh.

In the past, heavy traffic and difficult road conditions often made the pass challenging to reach. However, the opening of the Atal Tunnel (Rohtang Tunnel) in 2020 has dramatically improved access to the region, allowing riders to once again enjoy the spectacular road across the original pass itself. The ride across Rohtang offers the first real taste of Himalayan mountain riding. Winding roads, changing weather conditions and breathtaking scenery make this stage both exciting and ideal for gradual acclimatization.

From the summit we descend into the rugged landscapes of Lahaul Valley, where the environment begins to change noticeably. The lush green foothills slowly give way to the more dramatic terrain of the high Himalayas. By afternoon we reach the small mountain town of Jispa, surrounded by towering peaks and vast alpine valleys. Here we spend the night as we prepare for the upcoming adventure into the remote Zanskar Valley.

Jispa – 3,200 m
Distance covered: approx. 140 km

Day 4: Across Shingo La into the Zanskar Valley

Today marks one of the most adventurous stages of the entire Roads to Heaven motorcycle expedition. Leaving Jispa, we head deeper into the high Himalayas toward the remote frontier between Lahaul and Zanskar. The road gradually climbs through rugged mountain landscapes as we approach the newly opened route leading toward Shingo La Pass. This spectacular trail connects the isolated Zanskar Valley with the outer Himalayan regions and has only recently become accessible for vehicles.

The ascent to Shingo La (5,105 m) is a true adventure ride. Sections of the route are still rough and unpaved, requiring concentration and careful riding. The dramatic scenery of glaciers, steep rock walls and high alpine valleys makes this one of the most memorable motorcycle routes in the Himalayas. After reaching the summit, we descend into the remote and rarely visited Zanskar Valley. The landscape changes noticeably as wide river valleys and traditional villages appear between the towering mountain ranges.

Our route continues toward Padum, the cultural center of Zanskar. Before reaching the town we visit the historic Bardan Monastery, beautifully located on a rocky hill above the Stod River. This important Buddhist monastery offers a fascinating introduction to the spiritual traditions of the region. In the late afternoon we arrive in Padum, a small but lively town surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. After the demanding ride across Shingo La, the evening provides a welcome opportunity to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Zanskar Valley.

Padum – 3,650 m
Distance covered: approx. 170 km

Day 5: Spritual Treasure of Zanskar

Today is dedicated to discovering the remote and culturally rich Zanskar Valley, one of the most isolated regions of the Indian Himalayas. Surrounded by high mountain ranges and deep river valleys, Zanskar has preserved a unique identity shaped by centuries of Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Our first stop is the nearby Karsha Monastery, the largest and most important monastery in Zanskar. This impressive complex is built on a hillside overlooking the valley and is home to a vibrant community of monks. From here we enjoy sweeping views across the surrounding villages, fields and rugged Himalayan landscapes.

We then continue to Sani Gompa, one of the oldest religious sites in the entire region. According to local tradition, the monastery dates back many centuries and is closely connected to the early spread of Buddhism in the Himalayas. The peaceful setting and historic atmosphere make this a fascinating place to explore. Later we ride toward the village of Zangla, where the ruins of the former Zangla Palace stand dramatically on a rocky hill above the valley. This former royal residence once served as the seat of the Zanskar kings and offers a remarkable glimpse into the region’s history.

Throughout the day we ride along quiet roads through traditional villages, fertile river terraces and wide open valleys framed by towering Himalayan peaks. The relaxed pace allows us to fully appreciate the unique culture and landscapes of this remarkable region. By afternoon we return to Padum, where the remainder of the day can be spent relaxing, visiting the local market or enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the Zanskar Valley.

Padum – 3,650 m
Distance covered: approx. 100 km

Day 6: Through the Zanskar Gorge – Over High Passes

Leaving Padum early in the morning, we head north into one of the most remote and spectacular regions of the Indian Himalayas. Shortly after leaving town, the paved road ends and the real adventure begins. The trail follows the Zanskar River deep into the dramatic Zanskar Gorge, where towering canyon walls rise steeply above the narrow track. The terrain quickly becomes more demanding. Several river crossings await before we begin climbing higher into the mountains. A newly constructed gravel road leads us toward the remote passes of Sisir La (4,790 m) and Singge La (5,060 m), two high Himalayan passes that have only recently opened a new connection between the Zanskar Valley and Ladakh.

This section of the route is one of the most exciting parts of the journey. The road is rough and narrow, with loose rock and tight switchbacks carved into the mountainside. Riding here requires concentration and solid off-road skills, but the reward is an unforgettable Himalayan motorcycle adventure through landscapes that remain largely untouched by modern development. With some luck we may even spot wildlife such as Himalayan wild asses or birds of prey circling high above the valley.

By the afternoon we descend into the peaceful oasis of Tingmosgang, a traditional Ladakhi village nestled in a quiet side valley near the Indus River. Our overnight stay is in a charming Tibetan-style guesthouse run by a local family. Surrounded by apricot orchards and a small mountain stream flowing through the garden, it is the perfect place to relax after a challenging day riding through the mountains of Ladakh.

Tingmosgang – 3,100 m
Distance covered: approx. 220 km

Day 7: Ride to Leh – Capital of Ladakh

Today we ride toward the cultural heart of Ladakh as we follow sections of the famous Srinagar–Leh Highway, one of the most iconic roads of any Ladakh motorcycle tour. After the demanding off-road stages of the previous days, this ride offers a more relaxed experience on mostly paved roads while still delivering spectacular Himalayan scenery. One of the highlights of the day is a visit to Lamayuru Monastery, one of the oldest and most fascinating Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. The monastery sits dramatically above a surreal “moon landscape” of eroded rock formations and offers breathtaking views over the valley.

Continuing along the Indus River — the lifeline of the region — we ride through the scenic Indus Valley of Ladakh, passing traditional villages and dramatic desert mountains. Along the way we explore the historic ruins of Basgo Palace, once an important royal residence of the Ladakhi kings, and visit Likir Monastery, home to the impressive Snake Buddha statue. From here we continue toward the small mountain village of Yang Tang before crossing the Meptak La Pass (4,030 m). The route then leads us through the peaceful village of Hemis Shukpachan, famous for its ancient sacred juniper forest.

In the afternoon we arrive in Leh, the vibrant capital of Ladakh and one of the most important destinations on any Himalayan motorcycle adventure. After checking into our centrally located hotel, there is time to explore the town on foot and wander through the narrow alleys of Leh’s historic old town.

Leh – 3,500 m
Distance covered: approx. 200 km

Day 8: Relaxation Day in Leh

Today is a well-deserved rest day in Leh, the historic capital of Ladakh, located at an altitude of 3,524 meters in a broad valley surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Indian Himalayas. For centuries, Leh served as an important trading center along a branch of the Silk Road, linking Tibet, Central Asia, and northern India. Valuable goods such as salt, silk, brocade, cashmere wool, and indigo once passed through this remote Himalayan town.

The day is free to relax or explore Leh at your own pace. Those who wish can take a short hike up to the impressive Leh Palace, also known as the King’s Palace, which rises above the old town. Built in the 17th century, this former royal residence once served as the seat of the kings of Ladakh and offers sweeping views across the Indus Valley and the surrounding mountains. Another popular option is visiting the peaceful Shanti Stupa, perched on a hill above the town and offering one of the most beautiful panoramic viewpoints in Leh. The lively bazaar, with its cafés, small restaurants, and traditional handicraft shops, is also well worth exploring.

This rest day also serves as a useful buffer in the itinerary in case weather, road conditions, or other unforeseen circumstances have caused delays during the adventurous riding stages of the tour.

Leh – 3,500 m

Day 9: From the Indus Valley via the “Highway to Heaven”

Leaving Leh, we begin the next stage of our journey by riding through the upper Indus Valley, visiting two of the most important Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. Our first stop is Hemis Monastery, one of the largest and most influential monasteries in the region. Founded in the 10th century, it is closely associated with the great yogi Naropa, an important figure in the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.

We then continue to Thiksey Monastery, beautifully situated on a hill overlooking the Indus Valley. The monastery is known for its impressive architecture and its large statue of Maitreya Buddha, one of the most recognizable religious landmarks in Ladakh. From here our route turns south as we join the famous Manali–Leh Highway, often called the “Highway to Heaven” for its dramatic high-altitude scenery. Although much of the road is now paved, the journey still offers plenty of riding excitement as we climb higher into the mountains.

After a lunch break along the way, we reach one of the great high passes of the Indian Himalayas: Tanglang La (5,328 m). Once considered the second-highest motorable pass in the world, the crossing offers breathtaking views across the vast high-altitude landscapes of Ladakh. Beyond the pass we leave the last settlements of Ladakh behind and descend toward the remote plateau surrounding Tso Kar, a beautiful high-altitude salt lake known for its rich wildlife and wide open landscapes. Our overnight stay is in a guesthouse near the lake, situated at an altitude of around 4,500 meters.

Day 10: Oh, Himalaya!

Today promises another spectacular riding day in the high mountains of the Indian Himalayas. We leave early in the morning to make the most of the long route ahead along the legendary Highway to Heaven. During the course of the day we cross three major Himalayan passes, each offering impressive landscapes and unforgettable riding conditions. The first is Lachung La (5,065 m), followed by Nakee La (4,739 m), a pass famous for its tight hairpin bends and rugged mountain terrain. The final major crossing of the day is Baralacha La (5,030 m), one of the most spectacular high mountain passes on the Leh–Manali road.

Road conditions vary throughout the day. Some sections are paved, while others remain rough or only partially surfaced. The changing terrain is part of the adventure, as the route leads through vast high-altitude plateaus, dramatic mountain valleys, and some of the most remote landscapes in the Himalayan region of Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. After a long and rewarding day of riding through these extraordinary mountain landscapes, we descend to the village of Keylong, located along the Bhaga River, where we spend the night surrounded by the peaceful scenery of the high Himalayas.

Keylong – 3.080 m
Distance covered: approx. 250 km

Day 11: Relax & Rock n´Roll

After the long high-altitude ride of the previous days, today begins on more relaxed roads as we leave Keylong and continue south through the dramatic landscapes of Himachal Pradesh. The first section of the ride follows mostly paved, single-lane mountain roads that wind through beautiful valleys and small Himalayan villages. Along the way we stop in Udaipur, a small mountain town known for the historic Triloknath Temple. This important pilgrimage site is unique in that it is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, reflecting the rich cultural traditions of the Himalayan region.

Beyond Udaipur the road gradually becomes more adventurous again. The route narrows as we enter the remote Pangi Valley, one of the least visited and most rugged regions of Himachal Pradesh. Here the road often follows steep cliffs above roaring mountain rivers, offering a thrilling ride through wild and untouched landscapes. Our destination today is the small town of Killar, the administrative center of the Pangi Valley. The village lies deep within the mountains and remains one of the most isolated settlements along this part of the route. We spend the night in simple local accommodation, experiencing the authentic atmosphere of this remote Himalayan region.

Day 12: Adventure over Saach Pass

Today’s ride once again takes us deep into remote mountain landscapes. Our destination is Khajjiar, located in one of the most secluded regions of Himachal Pradesh. The route leads through narrow valleys, along rushing mountain rivers, and across rugged Himalayan terrain. The highlight of the day is the crossing of Saach Pass (4,450 m), one of the most adventurous high mountain passes in the region. Much of the road remains unpaved, and the route winds through dramatic canyons and steep mountain slopes. The ride across Saach Pass offers an unforgettable experience for riders who enjoy challenging and remote Himalayan mountain roads.

After crossing the pass, the landscape gradually changes as we descend toward greener valleys and forests. By the afternoon we reach Khajjiar, a beautiful alpine meadow often referred to as the “Mini Switzerland of India.” Surrounded by cedar forests and rolling hills, the area offers a striking contrast to the rugged high-altitude terrain we have crossed earlier in the day. After another adventurous day in the mountains, we enjoy a relaxing evening in this peaceful Himalayan setting.

Since the late 1950s, thousands of Tibetan refugees, monks, and scholars have settled here, turning McLeod Ganj into one of the most important centers of Tibetan culture in India. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and peaceful courtyards, the institute offers insight into Tibetan wood carving, thangka painting, and other centuries-old artistic traditions.

Questions & Answers

Do I need travel insurance?2026-03-14T20:24:19+01:00
Yes, we strongly recommend both travel cancellation insurance and travel health insurance. Make sure your policy covers medical evacuation, which can be expensive in remote mountain regions.
What riding gear should I bring?2026-03-14T20:23:42+01:00
You should bring your own motorcycle riding gear, including a helmet, riding jacket and trousers with protectors, motorcycle boots or riding shoes, and gloves. Because we ride at high altitude in the Himalayas, temperatures can vary greatly. We recommend bringing warm layers or jacket liners, winter gloves, a neck scarf or face protection, and waterproof riding gear if your suit is not waterproof. We do not rent riding clothing, as personal gear offers the best comfort and protection.
Do I need a visa to travel to India?2026-03-14T20:22:20+01:00
Yes. Most travelers need a tourist visa for India, which must be obtained before arrival. The easiest option is the Indian e-Tourist Visa, which can be applied for online. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.
Will there be training for riding on gravel roads?2026-03-14T20:21:36+01:00
No formal rider training is provided during the tour. Participants should already have experience riding on gravel or dirt roads. During the tour briefing our guides will provide useful advice, and they are always happy to offer tips and support along the way.
What happens if I cannot ride part of a difficult stage?2026-03-14T20:20:55+01:00
If a section becomes too challenging, our mechanic — who travels with the group — can ride your motorcycle for you. You can then continue that stage comfortably in the support vehicle.
Which motorcycles are used on this tour?2026-03-14T20:20:23+01:00

The tour is operated exclusively with the Royal Enfield Himalayan. This lightweight adventure motorcycle is particularly well suited to the demanding terrain and high mountain roads of Ladakh and Zanskar.

How difficult are the gravel roads?2026-03-14T20:19:18+01:00
The gravel sections on this tour are among the most challenging in our entire program. The terrain is comparable to the off-road stages on our Central Asia overland expeditions through Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Riders should already have experience riding on gravel and rough mountain roads. If you have limited off-road experience, we recommend starting with an easier Himalayan tour such as our 3 Lakes of Ladakh motorcycle tour.
Are there river crossings during the tour?2026-03-14T20:18:41+01:00
Yes. In parts of Zanskar and Ladakh there are occasional short river crossings. These are usually shallow but can involve loose stones and uneven surfaces, which adds to the adventurous nature of the route.
Is the tour suitable for passengers?2026-03-14T20:17:55+01:00
This tour is generally not ideal for passengers. Several stages include demanding off-road terrain where riding two-up can be difficult. During these sections, passengers may need to travel in the support vehicle.
Why does the tour only take place in summer?2026-03-14T20:17:19+01:00
The tour is scheduled during the short period when the remote mountain passes between Zanskar and Ladakh are accessible. These high-altitude routes are usually open only for a limited time between the monsoon season and the beginning of winter, making summer the only reliable season to complete this journey.
