Bhutan Intensive Motorcycle Tour

Himalayan Passes | Tiger’s Nest Monastery | 11 Days | Royal Enfield Adventure

Hidden deep within the eastern Himalayas lies Bhutan, one of the most fascinating and least-visited countries in Asia. Known as the “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” this small Himalayan kingdom is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, ancient monasteries and a culture that has remained largely untouched by modern mass tourism. Despite its modest size, Bhutan offers extraordinary geographic diversity. Dense forests, steep mountain valleys and deep river gorges dominate the landscape, while winding roads climb over high Himalayan passes and descend into subtropical jungle regions. For motorcyclists, this creates one of the most spectacular riding destinations in the world.

Our Bhutan Intensive Motorcycle Tour is an 11-day Himalayan adventure designed for riders who want to experience the full diversity of Bhutan. Travelling on Royal Enfield motorcycles, we cross remote mountain passes, ride through pristine forests and explore traditional villages where centuries-old Buddhist culture continues to shape daily life. The journey begins with arrival in Delhi, followed by a short flight to Bagdogra in eastern India. From there we travel to the Bhutanese border at Phuentsholing, where our motorcycles await and the adventure truly begins.

Over the following days we ride westward across Bhutan, crossing several spectacular Himalayan passes above 3,000 meters. Highlights include the rugged Trumshing La Pass (3,789 m) and Chele La Pass (3,988 m) — the highest motorable road in Bhutan. These routes offer breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains and provide some of the finest motorcycle roads in Asia. Along the way we explore the cultural heart of Bhutan. In Thimphu, the world’s smallest capital city, we discover monasteries, traditional architecture and lively local markets. In the remote Bumthang Valley, often called the “Switzerland of Bhutan,” ancient temples and monasteries reveal the spiritual history of the kingdom.

One of the most unforgettable experiences of the tour is the visit to Taktsang Monastery, better known as the legendary Tiger’s Nest. Perched dramatically on a cliff high above the Paro Valley, this sacred monastery is one of the most iconic landmarks in the Himalayas and a symbol of Bhutanese Buddhism. Throughout the journey we encounter a country where traditions remain deeply rooted. Bhutan famously measures progress through Gross National Happiness, reflecting a national philosophy that prioritizes culture, nature and spiritual wellbeing.

This guided Bhutan motorcycle expedition combines spectacular Himalayan riding, rich Buddhist culture and pristine natural landscapes — offering a rare opportunity to explore one of the world’s most extraordinary mountain kingdoms. Bhutan remains one of the most exclusive travel destinations on Earth. Riding through this remote Himalayan country on a motorcycle is not just a tour — it is a true adventure into a living culture that has changed little over centuries.

I had …

… a lot of fun on the tour. We got along well within the group and the guides were also very nice. The tour was very well organized.

Tibetmoto Tours …

… has put together a very nice tour with a lot of variety, huge gorges and wide mountain views. The tour was a lot of fun in the group and I’m already looking forward to the next tour with Tibetmoto!

Mark B.

The bikes …

… were very easy to ride on the tour. The winding roads in the gorge and on the mountains were easy for an experienced driver like me and were a lot of fun. For that alone I would book the tour again.

Winfired W.

It’s been …

… a long time since I found such a well-organized tour as this one. The many highlights, such as the city of Lijiang or the deep Tiger Leaping Gorge, were just as worth seeing as the biggest prayer wheel in the world in Shangri-La. But my personal highlight was spending the night with a Tibetan family. Excellent!

Bhutan Intensive Motorcycle Tour – Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Bhutan

Your journey to the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan begins with an early morning arrival at Delhi International Airport. From here we board a short domestic flight to Bagdogra, located in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal near the foothills of the Himalayas. After landing in Bagdogra, we continue by private transfer toward the Bhutanese border at Phuentsholing, the gateway to Bhutan for overland travelers. Once the border formalities are completed, you officially enter one of the most fascinating and least-visited countries in the Himalayas.

Phuentsholing lies at the edge of the subtropical lowlands and marks the starting point of our Bhutan motorcycle adventure. The relaxed atmosphere of the town offers a perfect opportunity to rest after the journey and prepare for the days of riding ahead. In the evening, we meet for a welcome dinner, where you will get to know the rest of the group and receive a short introduction to the upcoming Bhutan motorcycle tour. Our tour guides will present the route, motorcycles and travel logistics before the riding begins the following day. This first evening is intentionally relaxed, allowing everyone to settle in and get ready for the adventure through the Himalayan landscapes of Bhutan.

Distance covered: Airport transfers and border crossing only

Day 2: Into the Mountains: Ride from Phuentsholing to Thimphu

Today the real riding begins as our Bhutan motorcycle tour officially gets underway. After completing the remaining border formalities in Phuentsholing, we take delivery of the motorcycles and start our journey into the Himalayan mountains. Almost immediately the road begins to climb. The warm subtropical lowlands give way to winding mountain roads as we ride north along the dramatic Wang Chhu River valley. Endless curves lead us steadily higher into the Bhutanese highlands while dense forests and deep gorges create spectacular scenery along the route.

This stage offers a perfect introduction to riding in Bhutan. Traffic is minimal, the roads are beautifully winding, and the views across the surrounding valleys become increasingly impressive as we gain altitude. Several scenic viewpoints along the way invite us to stop and take photos of the rugged Himalayan landscape. As we approach the high valley of Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, the scenery opens into a wide mountain basin surrounded by forested hills. Despite being the political and cultural center of the country, Thimphu retains the relaxed character of a small Himalayan town.
In the evening we explore the lively atmosphere of Bhutan’s capital. After dinner at a local restaurant, those who wish can join a short bar tour through Thimphu, where a surprising number of small bars and music venues create an enjoyable nightlife scene. Overnight stay in Thimphu at an altitude of approximately 2,330 meters.

Distance covered: approx. 180 km

Day 3: Dochu La Pass and the Valley of the Black-Necked Cranes

After breakfast we begin the day with one of the most impressive viewpoints in Thimphu. A short ride brings us to the enormous Buddha Dordenma statue, rising more than 50 meters above the valley. From here we enjoy spectacular panoramic views over Bhutan’s capital and the surrounding Himalayan hills. Before leaving Thimphu we visit Semtokha Dzong, one of the oldest fortresses in Bhutan and an important center of Buddhist learning. This historic dzong provides a fascinating insight into Bhutan’s monastic architecture and religious traditions.

Soon afterwards the road begins to climb steadily as we ride through dense mountain forests toward Dochu La Pass (3,450 m). The summit is marked by a striking group of 108 traditional Bhutanese chortens surrounded by prayer flags. On clear days, the pass offers breathtaking views of the distant Himalayan mountain range. From Dochu La we continue west before leaving the main road to ride toward the beautiful Phobjikha Valley, also known as the Valley of the Black-Necked Cranes. This wide glacial valley is one of Bhutan’s most scenic landscapes and an important winter habitat for the rare black-necked cranes that migrate here from Tibet.

Nearby stands the historic Gangtey Monastery, one of the most important monasteries of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Surrounded by rolling hills and traditional farmhouses, the monastery offers a peaceful atmosphere and wonderful views across the valley. We spend the night in the Phobjikha Valley at an altitude of around 2,800 meters, with time to relax or take a short walk through the tranquil mountain landscape.

Distance covered: approx. 140 km

Day 4: Riding to Bumthang, the Switzerland of Bhutan

Today’s stage is one of the most enjoyable riding days of the entire Bhutan motorcycle tour. The road winds through dense mountain forests and quiet valleys where endless curves make for pure motorcycling pleasure. Leaving the Phobjikha Valley, we climb steadily through the forested highlands of central Bhutan. This region is often called the “Black Mountains”, a rugged landscape of deep forests and remote mountain ridges. Our route soon reaches Pele La Pass (3,300 m), an important crossing between western and central Bhutan. The pass is often decorated with colorful prayer flags and small chortens, reflecting the strong Buddhist traditions of the region.

Descending from the pass we make a short stop at the impressive Chendebji Chorten, a beautiful white stupa inspired by the famous Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu. Surrounded by forested hills, this peaceful monument is one of Bhutan’s most photogenic cultural sites. Continuing eastward, the road climbs again toward Yotong La Pass (3,425 m) before descending into the beautiful Bumthang Valley, one of the most culturally significant regions of Bhutan. Known for its rolling landscapes, traditional villages and ancient temples, Bumthang is often described as the spiritual heart of the country. During our stay we visit several important religious sites, including Jambay Lhakhang, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Bhutan, believed to have been founded in the 7th century by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. Nearby stands Tamshing Monastery, another historic monastery famous for its ancient murals and deep spiritual significance.

Bumthang also offers a unique culinary highlight. A small craft brewery operated by Swiss brewers produces traditional wheat beer using local ingredients. We stop here for a relaxed tasting, often accompanied by locally produced cheese — a surprisingly alpine touch in the heart of the Himalayas. In the evening we relax in the peaceful atmosphere of the Bumthang Valley, enjoying dinner and the clear mountain night sky.

Distance covered: approx. 160 km

Day 5: Trumshing La Pass and the Wild East of Bhutan

Today we ride into one of the most remote regions of the kingdom as our Bhutan motorcycle adventure continues eastward from the Bumthang Valley. This stage takes us through spectacular mountain landscapes and across some of the highest passes in Bhutan. Our first climb leads toward the small mountain settlement of Ura, one of the most traditional villages in the country. The houses here are built close together, creating a compact village layout that reflects the strong community life of rural Bhutan.

From Ura we continue toward Ura La Pass (3,500 m) before reaching the impressive Trumshing La Pass (3,789 m), one of the highest road passes in Bhutan. The ride to the summit passes through dense forests and alpine landscapes where the vegetation changes dramatically with altitude. On clear days, the surrounding ridges offer distant views toward the snow-covered Himalayan peaks, including Jomolhari (7,326 m), one of Bhutan’s most sacred mountains. Descending from the pass, the road winds through beautiful valleys and remote villages rarely visited by travelers. This part of Bhutan remains largely untouched by tourism, offering an authentic glimpse into traditional mountain life.

By afternoon we reach the historic town of Trongsa, strategically located in the center of the country. Here we visit the impressive Trongsa Dzong, one of the largest and most spectacular fortresses in Bhutan. Built in the 17th century, the dzong once served as the seat of power for the rulers of central Bhutan and still dominates the valley with its dramatic hillside setting. We also have the opportunity to observe local craftsmanship, including the famous Chumey Yathra weaving tradition, known for its beautifully patterned wool textiles. Overnight stay in Trongsa, surrounded by the peaceful mountain landscapes of central Bhutan.

Distance covered: approx. 200 km

Day 6: Tracks, Passes & Remote Areas

Today is the longest riding stage of our Bhutan motorcycle tour, taking us through some of the most remote and least-visited regions of the kingdom. We start early in the morning, as the day promises a full adventure across newly built mountain roads and hidden valleys. Leaving Trongsa, we follow a network of winding mountain roads that lead deep into the interior of Bhutan. This region has only recently become accessible thanks to new infrastructure projects, allowing us to explore areas that were previously difficult to reach.

The character of the ride changes frequently throughout the day. Smooth mountain roads alternate with sections of narrow dirt tracks, and in some places the route becomes a single-lane road clinging to the mountainside. These constantly changing conditions make this stage one of the most exciting riding days of the entire Bhutan motorcycle adventure. As we gradually descend southward, the landscape begins to transform dramatically. The cooler mountain climate gives way to warmer air and lush vegetation. Forests become denser, and tropical plants such as palm trees and banana treesbegin to appear along the roadside.

Our destination is Gelephu, a border town located along the Manas River close to the Indian frontier. Here the river spreads out into a broad delta landscape, creating a completely different atmosphere compared to the high mountain regions we have crossed earlier in the journey. Arriving in Gelephu feels like entering a new climate zone altogether — a fascinating contrast that highlights the extraordinary geographic diversity of Bhutan’s Himalayan landscapes. Overnight stay in Gelephu near the Indian border.

Distance covered: approx. 190 km

Day 7: Golden Langurs and the Road to Punakha Dzong

After the tropical landscapes of southern Bhutan, today’s ride takes us back into the hills as we leave Gelephu and begin climbing north toward central Bhutan. The road winds through countless curves as we gradually gain altitude again, riding between approximately 1,300 and 1,800 meters. This region is home to the Lhotshampa community, whose name translates to “Southern Borderlanders.” Many people in this part of Bhutan have Nepalese roots, creating a fascinating cultural contrast to the Tibetan-influenced traditions found in other parts of the country.

The road today is a true motorcyclist’s delight. Endless switchbacks and flowing curves lead us through forested hills and quiet rural landscapes. With a bit of luck, we may encounter one of the region’s most remarkable wildlife species — the golden langur monkey, a rare primate known for its striking golden fur and black face. These beautiful animals are sometimes spotted in the trees along the roadside. After several hours of spectacular riding we approach one of Bhutan’s most famous landmarks. In the distance, the impressive Punakha Dzong comes into view. Built in 1637, this majestic fortress monastery stands at the confluence of two rivers and is widely considered one of the most beautiful dzongs in the entire Himalayan region.

Punakha Dzong once served as the capital of Bhutan and remains an important religious and administrative center. The structure is also the winter residence of the Bhutanese monastic body and government, adding to its national significance. We take time to explore the fortress and admire its remarkable architecture before continuing to our guesthouse for the evening. After dinner we relax around a cozy campfire, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the Bhutanese countryside.

Distance covered: approx. 190 km

Old bridge alley in Lijiang

Day 8: Over Chele La Pass to the Haa Valley

Today we ride through the mountains of western Bhutan, tackling one of the most spectacular roads of the entire Bhutan motorcycle tour. The route climbs steadily through dense forests and winding mountain roads toward the highest motorable pass in the country. Our destination is Chele La Pass (3,988 m), the highest road pass in Bhutan and one of the most impressive viewpoints in the eastern Himalayas. From the summit, colorful prayer flags flutter in the mountain wind while panoramic views open across the surrounding peaks and the beautiful Haa Valley far below.

Descending from the pass, the road leads us through quiet mountain landscapes toward Haa Valley, one of Bhutan’s most secluded and traditional regions. Surrounded by forested ridges and remote villages, this valley has only recently opened to tourism and remains one of the least-visited areas of the country. Along the way we pass Dobji Monastery, located near a picturesque bridge, before continuing toward the Paro region. The road between these valleys is lined with impressive Bhutanese chortens, traditional Buddhist monuments that reflect the deep spiritual heritage of the kingdom.

Hidden among the hills is Ugyen Pelri Palace, built in the early twentieth century by Paro Penlop Tshering Penjor. The palace remains largely concealed within the surrounding forest and farmland. Eventually we reach the charming town of Paro, where most residents still live in traditional houses scattered among the surrounding fields. The town itself remains relatively small, preserving its authentic Bhutanese character. Tonight we stay in a beautiful boutique hotel in Paro, providing a comfortable base for exploring one of Bhutan’s most famous cultural regions.

Distance covered: approx. 180 km

Day 9: The Legendary Tiger’s Nest of Paro

Today is dedicated to one of the most iconic landmarks in the Himalayas: the famous Taktsang Monastery, better known as the Tiger’s Nest. Dramatically perched on a sheer cliff high above the Paro Valley, this sacred monastery is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Bhutan and a highlight of any journey through the kingdom. In the morning we begin a guided hike to the monastery. The trail climbs steadily through pine forests and prayer-flag-lined paths, gradually revealing breathtaking views across the valley below. After approximately 4 to 5 hours of hiking and about 500 meters of elevation gain, we reach the spectacular viewpoint overlooking the monastery complex.

According to Bhutanese legend, the Buddhist master Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) flew to this location on the back of a tiger and meditated in the cave that later became the foundation of the monastery. Today the Tiger’s Nest remains one of the most sacred religious sites in Bhutan. For participants who prefer not to complete the hike, an alternative program is available. We can explore the scenic Paro Valley, including a visit to the historic Drukgyel Dzong, a fortress ruin located near the northern end of the valley with impressive views toward the Himalayan mountains.

Later in the day there is time to stroll through the small town of Paro. The settlement only developed into a town in the late twentieth century, and the buildings along the main street are constructed in the traditional Bhutanese style. Small local shops, handicraft stores and cafés line the street, offering a relaxed atmosphere for sightseeing and souvenir shopping. In the evening we return to our hotel in Paro to reflect on one of the most memorable experiences of the entire Bhutan motorcycle adventure.

Day 10: Return ride back to India

After breakfast we begin the final riding stage of our Bhutan motorcycle tour, following the scenic route south along the Wang Chhu River valley. This road once again offers beautiful views of Bhutan’s forested mountains, deep river gorges and winding Himalayan roads. As we descend from the cooler mountain regions toward the subtropical lowlands, the landscape gradually changes. The dense mountain forests give way to warmer valleys and lush vegetation as we approach the border region.

By the afternoon we arrive back near the Bhutan–India border, where the motorcycle journey comes to an end. Our final evening together is spent at a comfortable resort near the border. During the farewell dinner, we look back on the highlights of the journey — from the remote valleys of eastern Bhutan and the high mountain passes of the Himalayas to the cultural treasures of Thimphu, Bumthang and Paro. It is a fitting moment to celebrate the unforgettable experiences shared during this Royal Enfield motorcycle adventure through Bhutan.

Distance covered: approx. 160 km

Day 11: Flight to Delhi

After breakfast we leave the Bhutanese border region and travel by private transfer back to Bagdogra Airport in northern India. From here we board our return flight to Delhi, bringing this unforgettable Bhutan motorcycle adventure to a close. Depending on the flight schedule, the arrival in Delhi is typically around midday. International return flights can be arranged from 8pm. For travelers who wish to continue exploring the region, there are several attractive options for extending the journey.

A popular choice is the nearby hill town of Darjeeling, located in the Indian state of West Bengal and famous for its tea plantations and views of the eastern Himalayas. The surrounding mountains also offer excellent opportunities for trekking and sightseeing. Another possibility is to continue to the beaches of Goa for a relaxing seaside extension after the Himalayan adventure. Whether returning home or continuing onward, the memories of riding through the remote mountain landscapes and unique culture of Bhutan will remain a lasting highlight.
