Western Sichuan: Tibetans, Grasslands and Himalaya – Itinerary

Day 1: Chengdu Arrival

Transfer to hotel. In the afternoon, depending on the arrival time, relaxing walk among the Tibetan district and its Wuhan Temple. Apart from that free time.

Day 2: Chengdu – Leshan – Ya’an:

From Chengdu the journey starts towards the south and the largest Buddha statue in the world in Leshan. You will have the opportunity to get close to it or see it in total from the boat on the river. In the following you will be transferred to the gate to the Himalayas, to Ya’an . This city is remarkable for its location at the river and the atmosphere that comes along with it.

Day 3: Ya’an – Kangding

The ride to Kanding leads you past beautiful gorges and high rising mountains. You will get the opportunity every now and then to take a rest and enjoy the landscape. After arriving in Kangding in the afternoon, a little hike up to the spot where you will have a wonderful view upon the city is planned.

Day 4: Kangding – Tagong

In Tagong verdant landscapes and majestic mountain ranges are awaiting you. Also the temple in Tagong is certainly worth visiting. A hike along the grasslands through the land of the nomads will introduce the life of the Tibetan nomads. Perhaps you will be able to visit a tent of the nomads.

Day 5: Tagong – Sertar

After a long ride we will offer a first orientation walk to enjoy the sunset. Free time after dinner. Sertar is located in a valley and is known for its mostly monk population and red roofs everywhere.

Day 6: Sertar

At first we will visit the prominently located Larung Gar temple and some smaller monasteries bevor walking up the hill to enjoy the beautiful view upon the city. Short ride to a heavenly burial square close by.

Day 7: Sertar – Aba

In Aba or Ngawa you will again be able to dive into Tibetan culture. The Kiri Gompa temple of the Gelugpa Buddhists in the north east of the city is worth a visit.

Day 8: Aba – Danba

In Danba county there are many picturesque villages located. Soup and Zhonglu are certainly highlights concerning their architecture and history. The watchtowers in Suopo for instance were build to protect, rather spot the river pirates and inform one another back in the days.

Day 9: Danba – Wolong – Chengdu

In the morning the journey continues to Oolong nature reserve. There you will have the opportunity to experience the Giant Panda live. In the late afternoon we will take off to Chengdu and enjoy there the traditional dish of Hotpot.

Day 10: Chengdu Departure

Transfer to airport and flight back.
