Indochina Highlands Motorcycle Tour
Thailand – Laos – Vietnam in 18 Days
Experience the very best of Northern Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam on a motorcycle journey that leads you deep into the heart of Indochina’s Highlands. This 18-day adventure brings together spectacular mountain landscapes, rich cultural encounters, and some of the most exciting riding roads in Southeast Asia. From the dramatic highlands of Northern Vietnam to the timeless rustic landscapes of North Laos and the Lanna cultural heritage of Northern Thailand, this tour is an unforgettable blend of discovery, freedom, and pure riding joy.
Your journey begins in Chiang Mai, the cultural capital of Northern Thailand, before we take winding mountain roads to the mighty Mekong River at the border to Laos and cross into a part of Laos where village life appears almost unchanged for generations. We then continue further into Laos on our way to Vietnam, spending another night in a resort surrounded by untouched nature. Entering Vietnam through Dien Bien Phu — the gateway to some of the most awe-inspiring scenery of the entire tour, anticipation for the upcoming ride and stunning landscapes North Vietnam’s highlands offers is rising.

From here, the road climbs into the legendary rice terraces and mist-covered peaks around Sapa, shaped by centuries of tradition and home to numerous ethnic minority groups. We continue deeper into the remote North, enjoying the best parts of the famous Ha Giang loop as we near Vietnam’s most northern point before wrapping back down southwards. Rugged karst mountains, quiet hill-tribe villages, and epic mountain passes accompany us. Entering into Hanoi, we experience another side of Vietnam – its bustling capital brimming with history and charm.
Leaving the city behind after spending a day discovering everything it has to offer, we ride west into the emerald-green valleys of Mai Chau before crossing the border back into Laos. Here, the landscapes and cultural depth of Laos truly unfold as we explore the mysterious Plain of Jars near Phonsavan and soak up the serene atmosphere and historical heritage of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage city and one of Southeast Asia’s most enchanting cultural hubs. Continuing along the Mekong, we reach Pak Beng, where we stay in a gorgeous resort perched high above the river, offering sweeping panoramic views — a perfect place to unwind and reflect on our experiences thus far.
The final stretch takes us back into Thailand. After crossing the border, we make a stop at the traditional Bo Kluea Salt Mines, a fascinating site where salt has been produced in the same way for centuries. From here, we continue on to Nan along some of Northern Thailand’s most rewarding roads for motorcyclists, before returning to Chiang Mai to complete our full Indochina loop. Across towering mountains, remote plateaus, dramatic river valleys, and culturally rich highlands, this tour offers an extraordinary combination of thrilling riding and meaningful encounters. Whether you’re sweeping through endless bends, rolling past terraced hillsides, visiting historically significant landmarks, or absorbing the quiet rhythm of the Mekong, each day provides impressions that will stay with you for a lifetime.
With handpicked routes, comfortable accommodations, and experienced local support, this adventure is ideal for riders seeking the true spirit of Indochina — raw, diverse, and endlessly fascinating. Discover Southeast Asia as few travelers ever do, combined with the freedom of riding a motorcycle through three countries!
I had …
… a lot of fun on the tour. We got along well within the group and the guides were also very nice. The tour was very well organized.

A beautiful tour through deep gorges and over huge mountains. The tour offered a breathtaking view which I will remember for a long time. The roads were very well paved and were great to ride.

Tibetmoto Tours …
… has put together a very nice tour with a lot of variety, huge gorges and wide mountain views. The tour was a lot of fun in the group and I’m already looking forward to the next tour with Tibetmoto!
The bikes …
… were very easy to ride on the tour. The winding roads in the gorge and on the mountains were easy for an experienced driver like me and were a lot of fun. For that alone I would book the tour again.
It’s been …
… a long time since I found such a well-organized tour as this one. The many highlights, such as the city of Lijiang or the deep Tiger Leaping Gorge, were just as worth seeing as the biggest prayer wheel in the world in Shangri-La. But my personal highlight was spending the night with a Tibetan family. Excellent!
